I was looking at something that our previous National Director wrote and was reflecting on it.
I love fishing but don’t get out as much as I would like!! Also when I am fishing I don’t catch as many as I would like!!
But Tony drew our attention to keeping our eyes not on our own understanding or conventional wisdom, but on God’s calling on our lives and resources. Conventional wisdom says keep it for ourselves, you’ve worked hard for it! But God says build your storehouse in heaven where rust and moth can’t get to it!!
“I think that people who fish, have a lot going for them! For me, I don’t find fishing easy but it can be very rewarding – emotionally, physically, spiritually – it gives me a time to reflect.
A number of Jesus’ first followers fished to provide for their families. On one occasion Jesus told these professionals to fish somewhere that they thought was plain stupid. But their efforts had been fruitless, so they did as Jesus said and caught so many fish the catch nearly sank the boat!
Hmm, perhaps this Christian life is more about trusting Jesus than only ourselves. When it comes to generosity – it can be difficult to handle the various competing emotions and thoughts. Our nature is only to do a bit, but sometimes that really isn’t enough.
I think I might have to go fishing again to clear my head and work out what Jesus would do.”
